Full screen on pixel phones

Jump to Best Response

Just wondering if anyone can tell me why Mobile Games play full screen on my pixel 2xl and stadia games do not. I'm awaiting my Pixel 5 pre-order and have found other owners of pixel phones wondering why they don't play in full screen. Stadia put this video last week. And the guys is playing on a new pixel5 and it's full screen.https://youtu.be/39-8kM7frtI

The games are rendered on the server for a fixed aspect ratio (16:9). Mobile phones have all sorts of different screen aspect ratios. The Stadia app will maximize the size of the game video to use as much of the screen as possible but it can't do anything about the aspect ratio. If it doesn't match, you get the black bars on either side to make up the difference. The alternatives would be to stretch the video horizontally to fill the width of the screen (distorting the image in the process) or to zoom in to fill the screen (losing content at the top and bottom).

The server where the game is running doesn't care if you're on a TV, computer, tablet, or phone. It renders the game exactly the same.

It's a commercial and the screens are simulated. Also, mobile games are designed to be adaptive to screen size due to different phone sizes. Games on Stadia are designed by developers originally for consoles with the fixed aspect of a tv screen.

I was so disappointed to get my 5g only to have back bars, and even worse, because of the no bezels at the bottom the image isn't even in the centre of the screen! Really disappointing.

Well how come there are some stadia users that say their phone's can run a full screen playing stadia?? Is it different with different phones sizes and brands. You'd think pixel phones would have a edge in this aspect. And Google should not be advertising that there phone's play in full screen Its misleading... Can any one from stadia Chim in here.

I totally understand the technical limitations, although with stadia being more akin to a pc (where many games do support custom resolutions) I hope that it comes in time. I think it was the misleading video that has led to so much disappointment it just looks so cool full screen on the new pixels!
