I'm considering dropping sub and just buying games outright from now on, have no 4k using a 5 year old HD but anytime I put it on HDR I feel it looks better, anyone know if it does look better or the colours are just brighter meaning I could get same effect messing with local brightness and contrast settings?
@ARGAH If your TV does not have HDR then no, you are not receiving HDR even if you activate it in the app. Stadia has a problem with HDR and is that many TVs have a universal HDR for everything that is played with HDR and this will be activated automatically.
What is Stadia's problem? Well HDR in the games have configuration options within it so HDR doubles and believe me that it causes poor performance and a very high loss of colors, so there are many criticisms towards Stadia that the games look too pale.
On the other hand I will tell you that if you play HDR you will know it because the colors are real you will see neon lights as you see them in real life, the sun as you see it in real life even the highlights and shadows, there are some effects exaggerated yes, but believe me that HDR is completely different from what you all saw in your life
Good question, honestly. With an HDR TV the difference, in at least destiny 2 is night and day here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Stadia/comments/e3grgq/graphic_comparison_hdr_vs_no_hdr/
But also, people saying the picture looks sharper without HDR, so its kind of a double edged sword.
But a TV without HDR support. Can't really say anything about that. ![]()
Yeah I feel like it looks sharper especially with lighter coloured writing and crosshairs in games, most I can gather is HDR makes the pixels better with an HDR tv but if you try Google my question like I have many times you probably won't be able to find an answer.
I sincerely believe that it depends on many factors. HDR is like playing with or without Ray Tracing.
I never had a 4k HDR monitor until I bought it specifically for Stadia. I can no longer live without HDR
I think if I could without 4K It depends on the size of your TV and the distance you play.
Also if you play many PRO games and use their discounts or instead prefer to buy one or two games and play them intensely.
I was an MMORPG player from 2004 to 2017 for me to play video games was to create a clan instruct a strong army and dominate the server, everything else did not matter to me or did I know that there were other games, YouTube or Twitch ... for me all those people were freaks .
Now I take it in a more relaxed way and recover the time and money invested in having many games and being less focused on a title or being highly competitive. But well let's stop talking about me ... just do tests, try to put CCU on a 1080 monitor without HDR or take it to the home of a person who has it ... or limit the transmission quality to moderate or disable HDR and compare if it's worth it
@Whito the problem is I feel like it makes a difference with my non HDR tv, obviously it works but what I'd like to know is does it work with my TV or is it placebo or making it better, screenshots on mobile don't look different comparing the two but then again my mobile has different settings to tv.

Ok @Whito, funny thing is I play with HDR on and it somehow looks better (placebo?) but when take pictures they look identical, wish I could run two videos split down the middle on my TV with HDR on one without to know for sure.
@ARGAH This is HDR Its placebo effect may be for two reasons. Activating HDR in the app may give you access to HDR activation in the game so that the clarity of the television nits will increase. 4K HDR streaming playback has better codec so you will get better color and sound sharpness even if your TV does not have the hardware. Sincerely before canceling I would do tests before
@Whito I am going to say after 3 months of wondering that HDR is not making any difference after all which means I will probably drop my sub because value games purchased much more than freebies, without 4k and HDR there is no point me continuing to sub but I will continue to purchase games.
@ARGAH Well you can always subscribe again in the future.
I think they are personal decisions.
Maybe you buy an HDR TV and it's worth it in the future.
We will always wait for you with open arms my friend
Yeah options always there, will probably drop a sub during sales if able to pick up a couple games at reduced price but without 4k or HDR and no plans to upgrade tv it's a waste of money, even if only £100 a year or so.
@ARGAH Exactly all are options, it is perfect to try. Honestly and this is between you and me since nobody is spitting us (When Star Citizen is released if Stadia does not succeed, it will simply disappear) But shhhhh don't tell anyone, it's our secret
What ChronosP shared, that is exactly what it looks like. The big huge massive difference between hdr and no hdr. Is literally like playing a different game altogether. You can see things that you could/would otherwise simply not see.
I tried this on the ps4 version of red dead redemption 2.
But on google stadia, I have to be honest with you here. I have tried every game hdr on and hdr off. I can see no difference. I've opened and restarted the games so many times for this purpose. Even photographed to check the difference. And I can't see any difference. I think hdr is simply always on. Also if you're not subscribed and also if you put it off or disable it.
And I hope it stays that way.
The questions you have to ask yourself:
@Dratster as of now I'm not going to sub, doesn't mean I'm not supporting just don't see any benefits of sub and don't care about top resolution as long as it's stable I'd play on 720p if had to.
Right now though two things would make me reconsider, one if they add queue for non subs meaning I may have to wait, that would be snide but would understand and sub or two, free to play games like dauntless, fortnite etc. are added and needed a sub to access them.
I've accepted Whito answer as solution, it does make my brightness pop a bit but only notice on crosshairs in dark areas playing destiny, it certainly doesn't add the effect seen in the comparing images shared in the thread.
Yeah same. But it would be weird for stadia to disable hdr on all of your games just because you don't have pro. I expect they will simply keep it this way.
@ARGAH I hope that at some point it is worth going back for the sub.
I will keep it until the launh of X box PS5 Then I will make a decision if I continue with Stadia I buy one of those consoles or against my will continue the PC master race.
The last game that Ghost Recon buys I swear it looks like a PS3 game.
I plan to clean up Division, if you have these horrible graphics and less than 30 FPS, I will surely keep the games I have with 4k HDR but I will stop buying
They could also go the "advertisation way" where for non pro members here and there some ads appear, while at loading screens or startup interface or something. Would like that way more then queuing times tbh. I already saw that on geforce now and its pretty bad in my opinion. Sometimes you have to wait for hours before you can play.
