Final dissertation on Google Stadia

Hi everyone! My name is Gabri, from Italy. I'm a student of Economics of Innovation and Technology and I'm writing my final dissertation on Google Stadia. My goal is to understand what are the drivers of the obstacles that Stadia is experiencing in expanding the user base, especially in terms of high-speed internet and technology infrastructures.

I use Stadia myself but unfortunately, I can't rely on my experience alone to write the research. Therefore, I created a Google form to collect some data. It would be extremely helpful if you guys could fill it! It takes less than 2 minutes! Of course, everything will be kept anonymous as even I cannot see your name or anything else.

Thank you very much!!

Thank you very much!!!

Also, I want to give you more info about the research and the survey itself. Basically I need data to estimate the potential market size for a product such as Stadia. Being internet speed a core element, I want to evaluate if the potential pool is wide enough to justify investment in gaming servitization. I can find data about % of high speed internet on internet, same for number of gamers. However, I having a hard time to cross analyze them and identify the number of gamers that have access to high speed internet, and that is why I created the form.

The other questions are there for two reasons: the first is that the so called network effects can play a role in the difficulties of Stadia to spread, providing thus a mitigating effect that I need to analyze. The second is to provide guidance for future research that will not be focused on technological penetration alone, but more on the marketing side. On that matter though, since I study economics and not marketing, I have not much of experience.

Hello @gabrier,

Thanks for sharing.
Filled out the form. It was a bit hard to answer the questions if a cloud game looks better than a console or pc.
I think the difference between console or pc is pretty large on the graphics department. :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hello @gabrier

Just a note while looking through the form – www.gcping.com is not a reliable method for measuring latency to the nearest Stadia game servers. That service is built using virtual machines deployed on Google Cloud – their competitor to AWS and Azure. But, Stadia doesn't run on Google Cloud. It runs on Google's infrastructure, and much of that infrastructure is deployed in locations outside of Google's data centers.

Just as an example, gcping.com shows that I have a 35ms latency to their global HTTPS load balancer, which matches response time to the nearest Google Cloud region. However, a quick ping to mail.google.com and stadia.com both show a response time around 10ms, because a lot of Google's services are deployed at a large data center in Chicago (350 East Cermak, one of the biggest data centers in the world, which hosts thousands of servers for a bunch of different companies).

But, even that isn't definitive, since Google hasn't disclosed exactly where the actual Stadia game servers are located – just that they have worked directly with internet service providers to bypass the usual path through the public internet in order to get Stadia gaming traffic (as opposed to the front end service hosted by stadia.com) into Google's network via a shorter (fewer hops) path.

Long story short, the modern internet is really complicated. Google's own network is both fantastic and connected with the public internet in really interesting ways at thousands of separate points deep inside last-mile internet service provider networks. This makes measuring effective latency for Stadia gaming challenging.

Why not Zoidberg?
