Experiencing lag with fiber optic line

Jump to Best Response

Hi all,

I have a fiber connection with the following statistics.

This is through Ethernet but I’ll get almost the same results on WiFi.

Downstream: 507 mb/s
Upstream: 493 mb/s
Ping: 4ms

I also ran https://projectstream.google.com/speedtest which says everything is fine and live close by a Google Edge Node so there shouldn’t be much latency. Still experience lots of lag sometimes, which is annoying especially when playing a shooter or racing game.

Is there some kind of diagnostic tool I can run to be sure all is OK at my side?

Or might the community have other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I think stability is more important than very high speed. Try this link:

if you let it run for 4 or 5 mins you’ll start to build up a picture of how stable your connection is. A lot of amber and red bars in the chart would mean you have some stability issues, which would explain your lag even with your high speeds.

Personally I’ve found that different routers make a huge difference to this. I have 500mbps fibre and if connected to my main BT router I get excellent stability and stadia is faultless. On the far side of the house I have a WAP that is hard wired back to the main router. If I’m connected to this I get good performance for most of the time but little laggy patches every 5 or 10 mins. It’s basically packet loss as far as I can tell / understand on this lower quality WAP.

I'm talking to my provider to send me a better router, mine is quite old (~5 years).

Will post update if I manage to fix it.
