Close and reopen your game for 4K resolution support. Cyberpunk 2077

Jump to Best Response

This action doesn't solve the problem.  4k working on other games.  I believe Stadia is throttling Cyberpunk and they should just be honest about it instead of giving an incorrect error message.  Frequently Stadia gives inaccurate error messages - this is frustrating.

I don't know if there's a glitch on this forum but my reply keeps getting deleted when I try to edit it so I'm posting it again. Apologies if this shows up as a double post:

I also have this issue in Ontario Canada. This seems to be a persistent issue for other people in this region as well, from what I've seen on Stadia subreddit posts.

The 4K stream works with every other game except Cyberpunk. The issue applies for both a session started in Chrome on a 4K PC setup as well as on Chromecast Ultra on a 4K TV.

On Cyberpunk 2077's launch night, the 4K stream worked well, but in the last few days it doesn’t ever load up 4K at all and I get the “Reopen game” for 4K message regardless of how many new sessions I try to reopen throughout the day and night. If I click on that message it further states:

"4K resolution available
Close and reopen your game for 4K resolution support."

My guess, and it’s probably wrong, is that Google oversold their server capacity for this game in this region to the extent that something switched to a 1080p limitation by default in the regional server hub specifically for this game.

Hopefully during this workweek we’ll see Google shuffle around the servers to allot more resources towards Cyberpunk or resolve whatever the cause of the issue actually is. Regardless of what the issue actually is, I just don’t want to play through this 40h game when it looks terrible on my big screens with Stadia’s 1080p compression.

I’ve seen people try to contact support about this and post their Stadia support responses where the support is telling them it’s either a glitch on the game publisher’s end or that it’s not-4K due to a connection limitation, but I want to emphasize that this “reopen” message in the connection quality menu makes it clear that this is on the Stadia server/stream end.

I’ve also seen Stadia subreddit posts that make clear that this is a persistent issue for multiple people in eastern Canada. Some people in other regions seem to have had this issue temporarily as their server centers exceed capacity, but If they reopen/reload the stream enough times they eventually get a 4K stream. In Ontario it never loads up without that “reopen” message, at least for me.

Cyberpunk looked so good on launch night in 4K and looks truly terrible on a large 4K screen in 1080p. We’re paying for Pro and supposed to get 4K here, so hopefully we get an official response about this soon.

I'll tell you what works reliably: start your game with a vpn, if you get an error message that says, "reopen game for 4k," try a different VPN.  When you get the error message, "4k unsupported by network" disconnect the VPN.  Your game will stop, reopen the game immediately without refreshing the browser page now on your normal connection.  This has worked for me every time.

Hi @Lienuss, can you tell me a bit more about the device you are using to play with, as well as your internet connection? If you are unable to access a 4K session, it is likely because one of these two things does not meet the requirement to do so. We can dig in here and try to get to the bottom of it.

I've been trying to get some answers from Google as well with no luck. https://mobilesyrup.com/2020/12/14/stadia-limited-cyberpunk-1080p-gameplay-reopen-game/

Thanks for trying to contact Google about the issue. I left a comment on your article as well. This has been an interesting experience, to say the least. I'm surprised that Google didn't even accurately acknowledge the issue in their response to your article today. I can't tell if they don't understand the issue/bug we're dealing with or if it's so far down their priority list that they don't want to even acknowledge it.

The separate "restart" bug from the last few days that was crashing out sessions and preventing people from starting any game session at all was addressed quickly, as one would expect given that those people weren't able to play at all. Not getting any reply day after day for our bug which directly states on screen: "4K resolution available. Close and reopen your game for 4K resolution support" is disappointing. Are the small handful of Stadia Pro subscribers who all seem to be having this issue persistently in this region the only ones that are noticing that 4K isn't working for this game? I'm no videophile but it's a noticeable downgrade from the 4K stream that the game was running in on launch night for Cyberpunk. I'd think that many more people would notice this, especially those who saw how much better it looked in 4K on launch night when the 4K stream quality was working for this game.

Thanks, yeah I'm really intrigued and would love a response. Is this something we'll have to fear with many game launches? and why does the problem still persist days later when the hype has died down?

This is my fear. I am now genuinely afraid to purchase and games on launch day through Stadia. I just don't trust them anymore.

The VPN solution has been working reliably for me the past few days.  It might even work with a free VPN because all you have to do is get the game started on a server that supports the 4k stream reliably.  Here's what I do:

1. Open new browser window, navigate to stadia.google.com and click the play arrow on Cyberpunk 2077.

2. Click the connection info button and check what it says about 4k: if it says, "Reopen Game" Close the game and go back to the stadia home page.

3. Start a VPN connection (I use vpnSecure)

4. Reload your stadia home tab, and click play button on Cyberpunk 2077 again.

5. Check connection info after the game loads.  As long as the message isn't "Reopen Game" ("unsupported by network" or "game will stop" or "4k" are all fine) you can go on to the next step - otherwise go back to step 3 and try a different VPN location.

6. Do this exactly: leave your game running, switch to your VPN control and close the VPN connection.  Your game will die suddenly and it will take you back to the stadia home page with an error message about your game stopping.

7. Do not reload your page, do not wait, immediately click the play arrow and you will enter your same game session using your normal (non-vpn) connection.  You may not see the 4k immediately, but as long as you don't see the error message, "Reopen Game" you will start to get 4k after a minute or less.

This works for me every time, I hope it works for others!

Thanks, that worked for me. But it isn't a great user experience that we are forced to do these things in order to play our games the way we were promised, and best of all since we are paying for not only the game, but Pro, so we could play the game in 4K.

I get it. Most people don't have 4K screens, so it wouldn't make as much of a difference, but I do, and since stadia doesn't support windowed mode, the game looks terrible running it in 1080p mode on a 4k 49 inch screen while sitting 3 / 4 feet away.

I'm paying for 4K, so I expect 4K. I don't think that is asking too much.

This is what I've been doing.

It's ridiculous that this is the lengths we need to go through in order to get 4k to work. This isn't something we should be having to do as paying subscribers. Google and the Stadia team should be embarrassed that things are this bad right now.

Here comes the ultimate solution of this issue:

I solved this by just using Chromium instead of the Chrome browser. Google Chrome has always been a **bleep**ty version of Chromium without properly working hardware acceleration and so on (sorry Sundar...). Just use Chromium version 87.0.4280.88 instead of Google Chrome and everything works flawlessly.

Did you have the Reopen game issue and Chromium fixed it?

I got excited that this would be a viable workaround for this issue, but sadly it didn't work for me/ It's still telling me to Reopen game :downcast_face_with_sweat:

Still an issue and here’s the respond from support today

We're sorry for the trouble, our team is aware of this and looking on a fix. We appreciate your patience.

This is unacceptable, stadia needs to either refund everyone who didn’t get what they paid for or fix this issue now!

North York here, same issue, Cyberpunk is the only game that won't start at 4K. The worst is that no one has a reliable answer why is this happening. I tried everything support asked but nothing works. I don't know if anyone noticed but sometimes even the 1080p looks horrible, blurred and like rendering at a much lower resolution.

Still an issue for me as well. I am located in Toronto, Ontario which is where others in a reddit thread have been experiencing issues (but I also saw Colorado and Ottawa user affected).

I contacted Stadia support and they immediately blamed the developer. Generally unhelpful since they did not acknowledge any issue whatsoever, noting that there were no internal notes on the problem, and said discussions about Google servers being the problem were "an opinion with no proof."

Reached out to CD Projekt Red and they mentioned the VPN workaround in this thread and then confirm pretty clearly that the issue was not with the game but instead with Google Stadia.

The issue is related to Google Stadia servers, not to the game itself.

I would recommend contacting Google Stadia Support concerning this issue.

I don't mind bugs and issue at all. But I would expect Google to acknowledge the issue and give us some indication of their plan given the number of people affected. Especially since we are paying Google (not developer) for 4K. Telling me to do the work to contact the developer, when the problem is potentially with Google, is not appreciated.

Supports are USELESS regarding this matter, I finally got a response that they admit its their fault and their engineers are working on the problem. I can see this being a problem for even more months to come because there just not enough players affected for them to do anything.

I have already cancelled stadia. For a platform to lie and false advertise over and over just makes me sick. They don’t even have the curtesy to make a public statement about it and they will keep advertising how amazing stadia is and we will just get locked at 1080p even if we pay for 4k. My only solution is to leave stadia for good, not interested in supporting such a company

Just got off support with stadia and they redirected me to contact CD Projekt. So, apparently their support is not on the same page. Google says talk to CDPR, CDPR says talk to google, meanwhile my monthly sub fee goes for a feature I can't use.  Ugh.

Thank you.  Let me give a bit of an update. I've been on the chat with stadia support 2x, and on the phone 1x, and have received an e-mail from tier 2 support.  So we have checked speed, verified ports, done all the basic troubleshooting.

The e-mail from tier 2 support is as follows:

  • TCP and UDP are ports in range 44700 - 44899.

  • These ports are required for playing games on Stadia, for more information on port forwarding, please refer to your router manufacturer’s instructions. A simple Google search for “port forwarding your router model” should bring up instructions on how to accomplish this.

  • If you’re using a work or school network, check with your network administrator. Your network administrator might block ports in this range.

  • It would also be worth trying to change your device’s DNS to Google Public DNS. This would make your connection more stable as your DNS won’t be auto assigned but instead, fixed on that said address. Here’s how to: Configure your network settings to use Google Public DNS

    • Primary Server: 8.8.8.8

    • Secondary Server: 8.8.4.4

  • Change default MTU size of network from default to 1492

I've done these things, and am still receiving the same "reopen game" message.

The TV is a SHARP LC-55Q620U.  My ISP is Spectrum. My projectstream speedtest is 222.43Mbps. My Router and modem are both from spectrum, the Spectrum "Wave 2" rac2v1s router which is a spectrum re-branded sagegmcom router, and Arris tm822g which is docsis 3.

I might be having trouble changing the DNS on the router. Spectrum might have locked that down. I get an error when I click apply, but when I log out and log in and refresh the 8.8.8.8 and 4.4 values are still there. so, *shrug*. I also have UPnP IGD enabled, so if CCU is capable, it should automagically be handling the port rules. I've tried it both ways. Finally, 4k works fine on doom, destiny, cakebash, etc.

I should have updated sooner, but 4K did work for me on the evening of Jan 6th (EST). No "reopen" message or anything. It just worked. I am unsure if a bug was fixed, I got lucky, or if a specific (and unknown to me) set of criteria was met to allow me 4K at that moment.

That said, I can't test again right now since I let my Pro subscription expire for the reasons that @Salad shared. Any sort of public statement in some forum or tweet would have satisfied me. But I didn't read anything like that as far as I could find and got the runaround from support. And if something was fixed, at least email me back in the support ticket to share that (or is that admitting fault?) the service does what it is supposed to do.
