Chromecast & Xfinity Wifi hotspot

Jump to Best Response

Hello All! I wanted to ask if there was any way to connect a chromecast to Xfinity wifi hotspots?

Let me explain that this is for my adult daughter who is developmentally challenged living in a group home. These homes are very restrictive about internet access, and some homes won't allow us to even bring in her own internet access. This is usually because of security concerns for the business. It's too restrictive we feel, but there really isn't much we can do about it.

My wife and I are retired and run an AirBnB. We have Xfinity service with excellent bandwidth and google mesh, offering Stadia games to our guests (it's a great little perk). We love the family plan for our boys going to school too! Just wish I could get my daughter to access our HUGE library of games. She's really bored at this group home and it would do a lot to keep her out of trouble. Xfinity has a public hotspot service, where every modem repeats the xfinity network. Currently one such hotspot rests over my daughters group home but when I tried to set up one of our chromecasts to it it wouldn't connect. I'm guessing it didn't like that Xfinity required a user account name along with a password.

I'm at a loss. Ideas, suggestions?

Hi @Hostile,

Looks like a AirBnB for me. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I am afraid that public hotspots are not the best option for cloud gaming if you want to use a Chromecast because you have to connect your Stadia controller also to the WiFi. Most public hotspots are pretty restrictive.

The Nerf Report has a nice video about it trying to run Stadia on a hotel WiFi.

One thing you still can try is not to use a Chromecast but a laptop or Chromebook and connect the Stadia controller (or any supported controller for that matter) with USB so the Stadia controller is not causing issues and Stadia is "just a website".
If that works maybe it is worth a shot to get a Chromecast Google TV and connect a controller to it with bluetooth (not the Stadia controller I am afraid but a PS4 controller for example). For more info about which controller a supported by which method check out THIS link.
Hope this helps and works out for your daughter.
