Borderlands 3 Couch Co-op

Jump to Best Response

Does Borderlands 3 support local co-op? I want to play the game locally with a friend that doesn't own the game. I bought it and there appears to be local only multiplayer but I haven't been able to make it work.

@ironfx, under "Players" for Borderlands 3 in the Stadia App's game "Store", it shows currently:

Single Player, 2-4 players Online Multiplayer, 2-4 players Online Co-op, 2-4 players Competitive

I think unless you explicitly see the word "local" when describing other than single player in the ”Players” section of a game's description, you most likely cannot play the game locally with another player.

For example, part of Mortal Kombat 11's "Players" description reads "2 players Local Multiplayer".

For Borderlands 3, I know some consoles have a split-screen for "local” co-op but the PC and Stadia versions appear to not have such an ability.

I wish but unfortunately there is no local co-op. When you're purchasing the game have to look for the words "local co-op" <followed by numbers of players> so it'll look something like this

Local co-op 2-4 and that means that you can couch co-op.

Look up the description for Darksiders.

@ironfx No local coop unfortunately for Borderlands 3. This is the same case for PC. Only console versions supports co-op.

Sad to read though, wanted to buy Borderlands 3 too for my boyfriend and me, but if we can't play it local co-op, I don't really see a sense in buying it. I wonder why it's available for consoles but not for Stadia/PC.

You could always have one of you play on your boyfriends Buddy Pass on a PC/laptop?  Only problem being that you'd have to buy Borderlands 3 a second time, but whilst it's half price, now's a good time to buy?

Yeah true @InstantKarmaUK thought about that too, but buying the game again just to be able to play together is not really our intention (even if it's cheap atm it's still 30 GBP that we could use for other things). :slightly_smiling_face: Another problem is that we don't have a laptop atm and the PC is in another room, which is a bit odd, to play a game together then when being not in the same room (at least for me it feels weird). :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I can see this being an exception/excuse for PC, but for Stadia, that's just straight bs. Anyone have official word saying it won't come to B3 later or such, besides game detail breakdown in the shop?

I grew up playing local co-op with split screen and that was on them smaller TV's. (Nintendo GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, etc)  As gaming changed/evolved?, the local machine had an excuse not to offer it anymore.  Resource hungry, blah, blah, blah.  IMO, it was more about selling more copies of games and consoles, aka the money.   Borderlands has always been split screen and I've loved the series for that. B3 on PS4 was riddled w bugs when it released, and worst via local co-op.  That's a topic of it's own...but enter Stadia, here's your chance to shine about what you've already bragged about, multiple instances via split screen without any burden, seamless.   So where is it now???   Do better, Stadia, do better.

It's interesting to see that Stadia doesn't directly fit anywhere, but I love that about it.  Thou works against it, as the common approach to excuses is, well the PC version can't do it.  Then where/when convenient, well the console version can't do it. Forget all that, and just do, Stadia.  :grinning_face_with_sweat:

@Chufu, I think the co-op split-screen on Borderlands 3 for XBOX One is absolutely horrible.  Too much screen real estate is taken away for either player to really enjoy the game the way it is meant to be played.  It is gimmicky at best. Borderlands 3 is however a tremendously awesome game in every other way

What Stadia needs to do though is somehow allow family and friends to play with you using another screen, controller, and Chromecast Ultra OR from a PC with Chrome and on Stadia.com while they are on the same network/Google Home - without having to buy a separate instance of the game.  Maybe for friends who do not have Stadia, they can give you one to many guest logins?  I really think games should be playable simultaneously with those in your Google Family Group.

IF Google cannot freely give this as I have it on XBOX, they should have a one-time, per game, multi-simultaneous-user, same-home pricing mechanism.  Or, there needs to be a monthly family plan.

How a family plan would work for Stadia Pro subscribers has still yet to be answered in the FAQ:

https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/9338946?hl=en

It still reads:

How will Stadia Pro work for a family? Can I share it or not? (i.e. Family Sharing)
Stay tuned for more details on upcoming Stadia features.
