4G and 5G experience from a full time traveler

Added: Full time traveler with unlimited funds; You can't really buy your way past congestion

If I avoid tower congestion(1900-0900) I can play in 720 mode without disconnect everywhere. Sometimes I even find spots, like in some parts of NJ, that get get 140+ Mbps 0900-1900; I guess due to MIMO or better tower scaling..

I get the same speeds on my S21 5G as I did my A70 4G. Both Verizon Unlimited. As far as I know 5G does nothing about tower congestion,  probably has no better compression or bit per hertz or however they measure cellular efficiency

Thanks for sharing your experience!  I've noticed that my 5G connection with my iPhone 12 has been almost perfect for playing Stadia.  Even with only two bars, I've been able to get stable gameplay with great quality.  To be honest, there are times in my own house that I'll switch off WiFi and go to 5G because the speed is better.

Yet this is only my experience.  I'm curious to hear about what others think!

5g and wifi is not even a comparison. 5g is way better. More stable. Faster. Lower latency. Higher capacity. More consistent. More flexible. Everything is way better about 5g. And 4g was and still is already way better and more consistent and reliable than wifi in many circumstances and situations for me. Also on 1080p streaming.

North europe. City. With 1000 mbps wifi download.

Ofcourse there is only one circunstance where wifi might compete. And that is when I force all my neighbours to disable the wifi, turn off all their devices. And also everyone at home. And sit up real close next to the wifi, with less than a meter distance. In which case, might aswell use a computer with ethernet.

I agree but the wifi at my home i have no issue with.

My biggest issue is the hotel internet.

I usually stay at Marriot hotels and connect my travel router(Slate) to the ethernet port. It's really great! I have the complimentary data upgrade with faster speeds.

The hotel wifi/ethernet port always goes through stuttering after every 60+ seconds.

The quality gets heavily pixelated, inputs lag, stays laggy for about 10 seconds, and then it returns to normal

I usually just stick with my 5g cell data when this happens. This benefits only if i have good cellular connection at the hotel i am staying in.

I even bring the chromecast ultra connected to the hotel TV with the ethernet port connected and It. To be honest, the only thing i like about the chromecast is the fact i can watch movies and such. I don't feel confident playing on it though. The best experiences i have are usually playing with my cell phone(oneplus 9 pro 5g) or tablet(Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+)

Not the case with me cause I get 240+ Mbps on my DOCSIS 3.0(cable) using 2.4Ghz 802.11n at home. At night when cell tower congestion is down I get 30-80 Mbps most places and only see 100+ in some places.

I find 720 mode takes at least 28Mbps and I lose some on the wifi link through my phone for some reason; not TTL throttling but probably some QoS config or content throttling on Verizon side. I need to test my hotspot more WLAN to see where the loss is.

I'm on "ultra wideband" unlimited too so no plan stuff holding back speeds
